When life changes quietly

At 47, Daku thought he had most things sorted.

He’d been working steadily for years and was adjusting to life after a long-term relationship ended. With everything else going on, his super wasn’t front of mind.

A conversation that sparked a realisation

One evening, a colleague mentioned something Daku hadn’t considered before: super isn’t automatically covered by a Will. Without a beneficiary nomination, decisions about who receives your super can take time, when loved ones are already dealing with enough.

Taking a first step with a non-binding nomination

Daku decided to start with a non-binding beneficiary nomination.1 This allowed him to indicate to CSC who he’d prefer his super to be paid to, without locking in a legally binding instruction. There was no expiry and no witnessing required—he simply logged in to CSC Navigator and made his nomination.

Within minutes, he nominated his 2 teenage children.

Why flexibility mattered

Life had already changed a lot for Daku, and flexibility mattered. A non-binding nomination reflected where things stood now, while giving him the option to review or update it later if his circumstances changed again. It wasn’t about finalising everything, it was about being prepared.

The best part?  You only need to do this once, then review it online when needed. Unlike binding nominations, which typically need renewing every three years, non-binding nominations1 remain in place indefinitely unless you change or cancel them. It’s that easy.

1 Some funds don’t offer the same beneficiary nomination options. Check your fund information on the csc.gov.au for what applies to you. A non-binding beneficiary nomination can help us decide who will get your super, but we’re not required to pay your super death benefit to the person or people you’ve nominated.
