  • DFRDB provides benefits for members who entered the ADF between 1 October 1972 and 30 September 1991.

  • DFRDB closed to new members on 30 September 1991.

  • DFRDB is a pure Defined Benefit scheme, and the benefit is calculated based on a formula. Investment returns have no impact on the retirement income that a member ultimately receives from us.

  • In brief, DFRDB offers members retirement benefits that become available when they have completed 20 years' service, invalidity benefits if they retire from the ADF on invalidity grounds, and benefits for dependants when they die.

  • From 1 July 2016, former serving DFRDB members who are in receipt of DFRDB pensions are not able to join the DFRDB or MilitarySuper if they return to the Permanent Forces or become continuous full-time Reservists. Instead, they are covered by the new ADF superannuation arrangement, which includes ADF Super and ADF Cover.

Fees and costs

DFRDB members do not pay any administration or other ongoing fees. We do not charge any investment fees directly to their account.

However, fees and costs that relate to the investment of any ancillary contributions are deducted from investment returns.

Built in Death and Invalidity Cover

Contributing DFRDB members are eligible for automatic Death and Invalidity Cover at no cost.

Invalidity benefits

Generally, members are covered for an Invalidity Benefit based on their degree of incapacity for civilian employment. They’ll be classified as either Class A (60% or more incapacity), Class B (30% or more but less than 60%) or Class C (less than 30%). If they are classified as class A or B, benefits are generally payable.

Death benefits

In the event of the member's death, Death Benefits are generally payable to eligible dependants or their estate. The benefits payable will depend on who is receiving them.

The amount we pay varies depending on whether the member dies in service or after they retire.

FAQ for DFRDB

What is DFRDB?

DFRDB, the Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits Scheme, was designed for eligible serving members of the Australian Defence Force.

DFRDB was closed to new members on 30 September 1991. It is a defined benefit scheme and the benefit is calculated based on a formula. Investment returns have no impact on the retirement income that a member ultimately receives from DFRDB. Members do not pay any administration, investment or other ongoing fees directly to their account.

In brief, DFRDB offers members retirement benefits that become available when they have completed 20 years of service, invalidity benefits if they retire from the ADF on invalidity grounds, and benefits for dependants when they die.

When can a member claim their retirement benefit?

Members can claim their retirement benefit once they have completed at least 20 years of effective service. DFRDB does not offer a transition to retirement option. Retirement pay is calculated as a percentage of the member's final salary, based on their completed whole years of effective service.

See the DFRDB Retirement Benefits fact sheet for more details.

Are there any restrictions on the types of contributions DFRDB can receive?

Only current contributing members can put money into their DFRDB account or receive employer contributions. DFRDB members are required to make contributions of 5.5% of their superannuation salary until they complete 40 years of service.

If a contributing member wants to make additional pre- or post-tax contributions, they can make these contributions to their MSBS Ancillary account. A MilitarySuper Ancillary benefit is an additional super account that complements a DFRDB or MilitarySuper membership.

The full list of the voluntary contributions that can be made to a MilitarySuper Ancillary benefit are in this fact sheet

Can a member roll over any part of their benefit?

A member can roll over their productivity or commutation amount to a complying super fund when they are eligible to claim their benefit.

If a member holds a MilitarySuper Ancillary account, they can roll this out to a complying super fund at any time using the Application to claim Ancillary Benefit Only form.

What insurance cover is available in DFRDB?

Death and invalidity benefits are a feature of DFRDB membership – they are not considered a form of insurance. These benefits are provided at no cost to members. Death and invalidity benefits are based on a formula. This means a member cannot increase or decrease their coverage.

Members cannot nominate beneficiaries. Benefits are generally payable to a member’s eligible spouse and/or eligible children or their estate.
