CSS Death and Invalidity Benefits
As a Commonwealth Superannuation Scheme (CSS) member, you automatically receive Death and Invalidity benefits. You may also be eligible to apply for insurance cover.
Benefits you receive and cover you can choose:
- Death and Invalidity benefits: automatically included at no extra cost to you.
- Income Protection, and Death and TPD insurance: by joining PSSap as an Ancillary member, you can apply for Income Protection, Death and TPD insurance through lifePLUS choice as an addition to your CSS Death and Invalidity benefits.
You should consider the PSSap PDS and Target Market Determination before making a decision about joining PSSap as an Ancillary member.
lifePLUS choice and CSS Death and Invalidity benefits
lifePLUS choice provides optional insurance cover on top of what you may receive through a CSS Death and Invalidity claim.
Who can apply and how it works
To apply for lifePLUS choice, you need to:
- have an accumulation account; and
- be under age 67 to apply for Income Protection cover and under 70 to apply for Death and TPD cover.
Opening an accumulation account
You can open an accumulation account with PSSap if you’ve been employed by an eligible employer for at least 12 continuous months and you’re either a:
- current contributing or preserved CSS members; or
- former CSS members who were contributing at any time on or after 7 March 2021.
When you join PSSap, your accumulation account works alongside your CSS account and allows you to apply for lifePLUS choice. For more information:
