Multiple super accounts could be quietly costing you thousands
If you’ve changed jobs, moved houses or changed your name - there’s a good chance you may have more than one super account. That could mean paying multiple sets of fees — leaving less of your hard-earned money working for your future.
Across Australia, $18.9 billion in super is currently lost or unclaimed* - that’s around $2,589 per person.
Some of it could be yours.

What is lost and unclaimed super?
Lost super is when a super fund still holds your money but can no longer contact you, or when your account hasn’t had any activity for a while.
Generally, super becomes ‘lost’ when:
- your fund has lost contact with you and your account hasn’t received a contribution or rollover for 12 months, or
- your account has become inactive, which means your fund hasn’t received a contribution or rollover for 5 years.
If the fund can’t reach you for a long time, they may be legally required to transfer your super to the ATO. When this happens, it’s called unclaimed super (or ATO-held super). The ATO simply holds onto the money until you claim it.
The good news is that it’s quick and easy to find your lost super and roll it into your main account.
