Honouring Women United by Defence Service

Sharing the stories of women united by defence service

CSC is proud to support sharing the stories of women united by Defence Service

On 11 September, as part of the end of Centenary of ANZAC celebrations, Honouring Women United by Defence Service 2018 held two events to commemorate all women whose lives have been impacted by service.

The day honoured the broad scope of service, sacrifices and contributions of women effected by defence service, including:

  • Women who are widowed as a result of their partners' service
  • Women who are currently serving in the Australian Defence Force
  • Women who are ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force
  • Women and their families whose lives have been impacted as a result of service—mothers, spouses, sisters and children who have suffered as a result of a family member’s service

Led by the War Widows Guild of Australia NSW, the events commenced with a Last Post and Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial, dedicated to the service and sacrifice of women veterans over the last 100 years.

The gathering marked a significant collaboration of six organisations—including War Widows’ Guild of Australia NSW, Legacy, RSL NSW, TPI Federation of Australia, Women’s Veterans Network Australia, Australian Defence Force and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs—who are committed to ensuring a stronger voice for all women united by defence service.

Organising HWUDS Committee Chair, Rhondda Vanzella OAM said, “This collaboration epitomises the power of women; and how, if we all work together, we can bring about a stronger voice, better support and better understanding for all Women United by Defence Service.”

Later in the evening, the 'Honouring Women United by Defence Service 2018' dinner was held, at which Dr Brendan Nelson AO, Director of Australian War Memorial delivered a presentation to honour women's service, sacrifices and contributions attributed to defence service.

CSC is proud to share just a few of the many highlights from the day, and to support the ongoing telling of stories of women united by Defence service.
